Travis was 12 years old. Passionate, motivated, athletic, and skilled. We worked on an outdoor court under the Caribbean sun to pursue his biggest goal: becoming a shooter.
In St. Kitts and Nevis basketball, everyone was an athlete. The paint was a battlefield, foul calls were few, and most teams played zone defense - so being an outside shooter was a rare and valuable skill.
This was the first time I stopped to take a critical look at the way I had been coached, and what I had just copied from my past mentors' style and philosophy.
Eventually I hit a wall and came to the conclusion that the "Demolition" method I had been taught wasn't working, and I needed a new way to approach shooting…
but it would take 8 more years to create a system that worked for every player, every time.
That’s what I now call The Sniper System.
Look out for my next few posts where I will explain how and why I transformed the way I coach shooting!
See you on the court,
Coach BJ
P.S. My years with Travis and the SKN basketball community proved to be an invaluable training ground for me to learn through trial and error culminating in becoming the Senior Team National Coach at the age of 27!
