This is the final part of a 6-part series I have written to define, compare, and contrast confidence and the way I see it evolving in 2026.
Part 6 - Aggressive vs Assertive
Assertiveness - being direct in expressing oneself.
Aggressiveness - bold determination in pursuing goals with intensity.
In this article, I explore what they are, how they differ, and how assertiveness fits into our Confidence Pyramid. (See Part 5 for visual model)
Assertiveness produces what most observers would label as leadership skills.
In my mind, it sits above Aggressiveness (which is applied individually) as a social skill necessary to compelling others to go with you toward your goal with intensity.
So let's review:
Certainty - is being sure of what to do, especially when supported by evidence of past success.
Confidence is trusting that you will act effectively in the future, based on what you understand and have proven your ability to do
Aggressiveness is a bold determination to pursue your goals with your full individual intensity - mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Assertiveness is being so certain, confident, and direct in expressing yourself that you can influence others to go with you toward your goal, following your example with the same intensity that you demonstrate.
We started this series with the idea that parents wanted aggressiveness, and saw the need for confidence, but what they were missing was simple Certainty.
At the other end of the rainbow, parents who want their player to be Aggressive and eventually see their player achieve that, realize that there are more levels to this - and that to really be successful in any area, their player needs Assertiveness to ultimately produce results in basketball or life, by building the skill of leading by example.
That only comes from the specific stack of certainty, confidence, and aggressiveness that leads to assertively expressing their thoughts, ideas, and vision for their future - enough to lead others, on the court, in the classroom, in a business, a family, or a battlefield...
Confidence works when you build it from the ground up, and never stop stacking skills from certainty to aggressiveness, and beyond!
